A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A beautiful and ornate gold fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This decorative piece is made of 9kt yellow gold and is detailed with a wonderful topper and faceted amethyst stone at the base. The amethyst stone is bezel set within a lovely repousse design, and displays a gorgeous vivid purple color. Above the amethyst stone is an exquisite topper, which is open in the center and comprised of an ornate swirled design. The gold is intricately detailed with hand engraved accents, giving it a textured and artistic look. At the top of the piece is an engraved gold loop where a chain can be easily threaded through. It's a very special piece and would make a perfect addition to any fob collection!
Measurements: The fob hangs approximately 1 1/4" long, and the base that holds the amethyst stone measures 1" by 7/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting and the amethyst stone is intact. There is a chip on the inside of the amethyst stone, but it does not detract from the beauty of the piece, and the exposed side of the amethyst is free of chips or cracks.
